Access to Resources only accessible at the Institute
Traveling to the Institute for Research Purposes
Many of the databases are proprietory and only accessible in the Institute. It might therefore be advisable for scholars to make the trip to Heidelberg, which also offers substantial amounts of hard-to-find non-digital resources. The Chiang Ching-kuo Foundation for International Scholarly Exchange has graciously made available funding supporting such travels within Europe. These funds are administered by the European Association of Chinese Studies.
Applicants should be sinologists based permanently in Europe and paid-up members of the EACS. Applications from non-members will be considered, however, especially in the case of young scholars, if accompanied by a recommendation from an EACS member.
Applications must include:
- a letter stating intended dates of travel and that the library to be visited is the library of the Institute of Chinese Studies at the University of Heidelberg.
- a statement of purpose, to include a short description of the research project, including precise indication of the sources and material to be used.
- a written statement obtained from the librarian of the Institute confirming that the research materials that are required a available for consultation.
- a one-page curriculum vitae with a list of main publications.
- a statement of the traveling expenses (Apex economy airfare or 2nd class rail fare), including a note of other sources of funding.
- in the case of Ph.D. students, a letter of recommendation from their supervisor.
- in the case of non-members, a letter of recommendation from an EACS member.
- address for correspondence, including fax and e-mail where possible.
Applications should be sent,
- for topics in fields of Classical Chinese Studies to Prof. Roderick Whitfield, Dept. of Art and Archaeology, School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London, Thornaugh Street, Russell Square, London WC1H OXG, United Kingdom, Fax +44-171-4363844, e-mail: rw5@soas.ac.uk
- for topics in the area of Modern Chinese Studies (post 1840) to Prof. Marianne Bastid-Bruguiere, 92 Bd. de Port Royal, 75005 Paris, France, Fax: +33 143547202, e-mail: bastid@canoe.ens.fr;
- for research which straddles the limit applications could be sent to either of these two scholars.

Hiring a Local Research Assistant
In order to facilitate long-distance access to digital resources as well as to those print and microfilm/microfiche resources only accessible in the Institute itself ChinaResource.org offers the option to hire a local research assistant. We will make efforts to find funding to facilitate the use of this option especially for young scholars.
Local research assistants will help with bibliographical researches, searches for particular authors' articles and terminological/biographical/topical searches in databases, and they will post the scanned, downloaded or copied materials.
For other search types please contact the ChinaResource.org administrator.
As far as feasible, materials will be sent as electronic files. Xerox copies will be sent by ordinary mail.
Costs are calculated according to clocked time at a rate of 12-18 Euro/hour depending on level of qualification required; charges for materials such as xerox copies will be separate. Payment can be made via credit card (VISA, MASTER), via Eurocheque or via money transfer. Materials will be sent after arrival of payment.
Requests for hiring a research assistant should be directed to:
